Spend three nights in Portugal’s capital, Lisbon, before beginning your journey through the wonderfully scenic Douro River Valley. Begin in the capital of the North, Porto, and continue to the ancient and picturesque city of Lamego. Ports of call include Regua, where there is an excursion to Lamego – which houses one of the most important places of pilgrimage in Portugal, the Nossa Senhora dos Remédios (Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies); the picturesque village of Barca d’Alva; enjoy a full day in the UNESCO town of Salamanca and see the University buildings, the 12th-century Romanesque church of San Martin and the House of Shells; Vega de Terron – tour Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, a small fortified village perched high on a hilltop. See 16th-century walls and walk down very narrow and steep medieval streets; revisit Regua and visit the palace and gardens of Mateus, located in the beautiful region of Trás-os-Montes just outside the city of Vila Real; enjoy a special dinner at the Alpendurada Monestery in Bitetos before returning to Porto and seeing the historical sites.  Along the way, enjoy wine and port tasting at various vineyards.

The optional PRE-CRUISE land program in Lisbon includes some great sites as well: 3 nights hotel in Lisbon at the InterContinental Lisbon (or similar), including city tour, which includes the old town as well as the spectacular 16th century Jeronimus Monastery.
